Capstone: Final Class

Three days from Capstone Night, this is where we stand with Boulder Beacon…

Waiting to hear from Tony Lewis-

I have emailed with Tony Lewis since receiving the most recent Test Flight version. Assuming Tony is extremely busy, I have not gotten word back as of any more progress; however, I have recently expressed my urgency in need for some sort of progress report for Thursday. I plan to have an update status on Boulder Beacon to share with guests and faculty and will also be nice to show both the interactive prototype as well as the Test Flight model…

Capstone Review 3/25/2013

In Weeks Past…

Testing:

-paper prototyping

–showed that all functionality seemed fairly natural except for a few button placements, which were relocated to more desirable locations.

What’s New?

While in Alabama, I worked with Stephen on setting up a meeting with one of his developer friends from Portland. Although we tried and failed to meet over break, we were able to get together last Wednesday for a google hangout where I was able to pitch my app.

Screen Shot 2013-03-25 at 8.26.33 AM

Tony has decided to take on the project and I am currently working on getting him the “tightened up vector designs” to him ASAP. With a large chunk of the code that can be used from apps Tony has already written, we may be able to have a professionally built, working prototype by Capstone Night…

Concerns:

-legal action

-in over my head?

-small amount of time

-am I doing this right?

-feedback delays

Capstone Review: Second Semester

Progress:

Spent most of break watching tutorials and trying to build out more of the programming….

Soo now the new plan:

After emailing with and meeting with Stephen, I have decided that in order to make moves forward, I should take a few steps back. With a more confident programmer, I am revamping the design of the app starting with a functionality flowchart and then moving to storyboards.

First things first….

GANTT

  • progress made with coding, but still behind schedule…not surprising however.

PROMOTION

PROGRESS

  • running code in iOS simulator
  • multiple annotations with relevant data
  • small step, but began using the correct type of xcode document and will now return to iTunes U to begin filling in gaps
  • pARk promises to be extremely helpful as long as I can break to code for myself (thanks Dustin!)
SET BACKS/ISSUES
  • keep running into these errors I cannot seem to solve, not the same as red alerts…
  • Not sure how to set two delegates with in the same program…

Capstone Review #2

Progress:

  • I have now gone out and rented a GPS, I have been to the field and collected data and made a table of the major areas that I plan to incorporate:
  • I have been working on drawing out a database schema
  • Currently looking for collaborators to help with coding…reached out through suggestion (FC), facebook and twitter.
  • Continuing online tutorials:

-lynda.com

-iTunesU

Problems/Issues:

  • Fogler GPS units have an accuracy of about 20-30 feet…will this be accurate enough to work?
  • Having trouble finding a programmer to collaborate with…
  • Watching a lot of tutorials, but does not seem to be helping with my own project as much. Feels as though I need some help breaking my project down into manageable chunks to take down one at a time and piece together.

Capstone Review #1

Opening Statement:

I want to use Boulder Beacon as an opportunity to help people get outdoors and go bouldering through the use of technology, not as a distraction from physical activity but as an aide.

Updated Gantt:

Slightly behind schedule on the programming…everything else seems to being going well.

Mock Web Page and Logo:

Data Collection / Research:

Currently awaiting a GPS navigator that will aide in accurate coordinates. Will build a database that will contain coordinates, names and grade (difficulty).

An example of the database as follows:

Problems:

  • service and reception
  • coding experience
  • user inputs and accuracy

Closing Statements:

Although the task is difficult in that I do not have much coding experience other than some CSS and HTML, I think that this project can be sucessful because it is designed for a specific audience. It is designed to be a tool and used as such. Having said that, everything from the look and feel of the app to the interactions will be simple, sleek and to the point.

Opening/Closing Statements

Opener:

I want to make a contribution to the sport by designing a mobile application that will use the benefits of technology to aide in the enjoyment of getting outside to go bouldering.

Closer:

In closing, I want to use this project to help get people active and bring them outdoors with the help of existing technology designed and marketed towards a specific niche, in this case bouldering.

Computer Free Capstone

As a hypothetical situation, if I were to design my capstone with the intentions of using little to no recent technology (computers and the likes), how would I do so?

This is a tough question to answer, because the project was not designed around the technology, but around the concept. The idea is to be lead to the boulders in the most efficient way possible. Taking the technology away means that no longer will the user have the information to lead them to the boulder so the information or ‘signal’ must come from the boulder itself. Off the top of my head, the most obvious solution would be to use birds…

Users would purchase special whistles that mimic a specific bird call. Meanwhile, we could create a nice environment for these birds by providing feeders near all the boulders. Hopefully, the climbers will use these whistles to insight a response from the birds hanging around the feeders. The climbers would then follow the sound of the calling birds to the rocks.

Once arrived at the rock, instead of an online profile, the climbers would just signed their names on a large board that has the various routes located on the rock. This plan would only work as long as the birds stay in the area, but as winter comes along and snow falls, trails could be shoveled or packed to show a path right to the climbing.

Personally, I think that the orignal idea is much stronger…. : )

Enhanced Capstone Proposal

This post is to exemplify an enhanced version of the capstone proposal. The post includes a few visual approaches to shed a more specific light on my intentions with this project. The approaches include some basic visuals such a some name ideas, a couple rough identity sketches and a rough wire frame of the apps functionality. This post also includes a promotional plan as well as an annotated bibliography of various companies and designers that are working on similar and related projects.

Approaches:

Brainstorm bubbles working on concepts and naming project.

Rough sketches on logo ideas and some possible names.

Rough wire frame sketches of app interface.

Promotion:

In planning the promotion of my capstone it is interesting because I feel like I am advertising to a very specific audience as that the rock climbing community is not all that large to begin with. After reading the posted link in the syllabus, I feel like I have some good ideas to run with. The obvious as well as necessary first option is the website. I want to have a website that can promote the app and offer any information. Also, the website can act as a service for user submitted geo-locations and offer any later updates for the app. In addition to the website, I think that an effective strategy would be to make some sort of video documentary to post to vimeo that can be a visual simulation as well as provide hype and get free advertising. The video could be seen as a commercial as well. I was thinking I might go with some scene where one climber struggles with a bunch of gear and trying to decipher a guidebook map while another climber uses the app with ease. On the other hand it would be cool to just make a short video with some footage of people using the app in some environment and some possible interviews. Another of the strategies from the reading that I plan on using is designing interesting graphic posters advertising the app. I think that if these were place in the right locations (Chadbourne to get the New Media crew and MaineBound to gather the rock climbing crew) and any obvious high traffic spots could produce great results. These posters could be used to promote both the app itself as well as the release party, which is another promotion strategy that I will explain later. Along the same lines as a strong graphic poster, branding was mentioned in the reading. I think that a well thought out and strongly designed brand that looks professional and makes sense is kin to making the right first impression when meeting someone for the first time. I plan to offer sketches and look forward to feedback as so that I can design the best possible identity.  Another idea that I though would be a effective promotional strategy would be a release party, but with a spin. Instead of a party at a venue, I will invite people to come test the app at Camp Roosevelt. Anyone who would want to join could after downloading the app for free. I feel like this is a smart and fun way to launch the app in the environment it was designed for.

Annotated Bibliography:

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-iphone-gps-apps-case-lost/

This site lists a few very popular GPS centered iPhone applications. I posted this link because of the app mentioned in the article, ‘Free GPS’. I think that this is useful because it shows two things, one being that people are obviously interested in being able to work with their GPS locations in fun and interactive ways. Also, this could be useful in the development of my own app both in modeling design as well as the fact that it is free and can be used to gather my own coordinates for the boulders.

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/aroundme/id290051590?mt=8

This site is for an app called ‘Around Me’. This is very important because I would really like to emulate what they have created in some ways. The app has a feature in which you can easily search for almost anything (restaurants, bars, taxis, movies ect.) and then by turning the phone into landscape mode they make use of augmented reality as you can look down a street and gather various informations on the surrounding adresses.

http://www.futuretap.com/home/whereto-en/

Along the same lines as ‘Around Me’. This is another example of location based application design. It is important to recognize the convergence of our technology and the real world. We are now finding ways to be connected to both simultaneously  sharing real world experience whilst having the technologic advantages of mobile based application design.

Why Location-Based Services Will Create Multiple Winners At The Application Layer

A very interesting article talking about the progression of location based services are becoming so popular and why designers must take this type of information into consideration while developing for entertainment and service applications.

This is a media production firm with a focus on the climbing community. I really enjoy their work and gather some inspiration from them. Also, I think that promoting this project through some sort of short documentary could be very successful.

http://www.mountainproject.com/

This is a similar service to my project. The website and mobile application allow members to sign in and research information about climbing areas. A lot of the information is user submitted which I think is the long term goal of my project.

http://www.logodesignlove.com/

This is a very popular blog that deals with logo design. The website offers tutorials and interesting articles. This could be very useful in the actual aesthetic design of my application and the accompanying website.

http://mobile.tutsplus.com/tutorials/mobile-web-apps/html5-geolocation/

I have used this site for tutorials before and they are definitely very helpful. I found this tutorial using HTML5 and I think that it will be useful in giving me an idea as to how to actually structure my code.

Capstone Proposal Revised

After the class discussing and feedback on my capstone idea, I believe that I have a clearer and more developed idea of what I would like to accomplish with my capstone project. I have developed my plan for the climbing app as my project.

The idea is that I will start using a local area that already has a guide book developed for the area, this way I can find the specific rocks with ease and I will eventually be able to compare the ease of using my app against that of the traditional guide book. I would use this local area as a prototype to test the app on. In the later versions, the user will be able to choose from a variety of climbing areas, but the app for the capstone project will launch with this one specific area. I plan to travel to the area and make a database for the area containing names, grades and gps locations. From there it should not be to amazingly difficult to write a program through which you can search for by name, difficulty and even popularity. It would be nice be able to use augmented reality in this app. If the user could just show up to an area and hold up the phone as if to take a picture, and see a beacon hovering in the woods leading you to the boulder, even though you cant see through all the bushes and foliage.

I think that there could be an opportunity for some sort of social networking experience to be had with this project. As I said, the idea is that as the prototype, it makes sense to keep it local and contained to really develop the project as best as possible. However, as a connected part of the project that could potentially extend the projects life into a sustainable app would be the opportunity to interact with the app through a website developed for the app. Maybe even an extended part of the app itself. Users would be able to upload new climbing areas or new rocks with in an area. They can upload the name, grades and even some comments on the area or climb itself. This would then be updated into the app itself. The reasoning for the separate website is that I think it would be smart for this app to run off-line. Many of the climbing areas around this part of the state do not get very good reception so, like some other apps, everything is already stored in the database and any new content will be available by just getting an update which can be promoted through the website.

Capstone Proposal (First Draft)

Andrew Robbins

MMD498

As a first draft proposal for my capstone project, I would like to, in some way, examine our use of brand identity in our culture. I have not totally decided what direction to take the project in, but I am confident that it is the subject I would like to focus on. I really enjoy the idea of branding. Not so much from the corporate end of things, but rather the aesthetic value of the marks as well as the concepts of design for purpose and the idea of strong symbolism.

I obviously have to link the project to new media in some way and this is where I am having trouble finding direction. There are several ways I have considered designing the capstone. It could possible take the direction of showing the prevalence of branding within our communities through some sort of narrative story using only brand marks in hopes to exemplify our ability to determine a course of events simply through the brands that are shown. This medium could be animation or video or possibly photographic. Another idea that I have been playing around with is that people have begun to brand themselves as individuals much like corporations do, I would like to somehow play with new media themes such as social networking and link it with individual branding and identity in some way.

I think that it is important to keep in mind themes such as many to many when designing my capstone. I understand that in branding identity design it can often seem to be a one to many situation and I look forward to finding a way to work with the concept on a many to many platform.

Exercise One:

In response to Problem One, I think that solution B would be the appropriate many to many solutions. I think that the idea of keeping the languages alive through a form of communication much like they used to back in the day. Not only would this solution offer a look back in time and a history lesson, but would promote communication between generations as well as offering educational links and resources.

In response to Problem Two, I think the most appropriate action would be Solution B. While a documentary would be entertaining, it seems to be only one or a few to many. If we were to execute solution B, we would be able to expose and share the beauty of the abandoned buildings while still offering the user to ability to leave their mark on the project as well as share with others.

For Problem Three, I would have to choose Solution A. While neither solution seems like it holds true to the many to many characteristic, I find that the first solution offers more interactivity and a better user experience. I think that anytime we have the opportunity to allow the user to help in the experience or find their own way through a problem or in pursuit of information that is usually the most effective means.

For the final problem, I think that solution B is the more practical of the two. The first solution has too many ways to go wrong and would also rely on trusting people to not vandalize and or steal the food. The projection idea is not only more feasible, but more than likely it is cheaper as well and offers more versatility. I think that this solution would also serve as a showcase for the NMD department being set in such a populated area of campus.

Release: Research

It is very important that during this project, I really narrow down exactly what I am criticizing about the education system as welll as offer up some sort of alternatives. In the process of researching the topic, I realized that it was not as easy a question to answer as I thought it should be. Many students are not satisfied with their education, but when asked what is wrong with it cannot explain their situation. After reading several articles, I have finally begun structuring my argument and possible amends.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/opinion/27taylor.html?_r=3&pagewanted=2&sq=Mark%20C%20Taylor&st=cse&scp=1

In this article, “End of the University as We Know It”, many of today’s educational problems are described and the second half of the article outlines a six part solution to these problems. I do not wish to address all of the problems that are mentioned in the article, but there was a few that really brought to light the feelings that I was having a hard time describing for myself. For example, the article describes that educational process as a mass production model that is doomed to fail. Also the author says that our educational focus is far too narrow and there is not nearly enough collaboration between disciplines.

“The dirty secret of higher education is that without underpaid graduate students to help in laboratories and with teaching, universities couldn’t conduct research or even instruct their growing undergraduate populations. That’s one of the main reasons we still encourage people to enroll in doctoral programs. It is simply cheaper to provide graduate students with modest stipends and adjuncts with as little as $5,000 a course — with no benefits — than it is to hire full-time professors.”

This quote really made an impression on me. I read it as this: In today’s educational system we are being asked to do more and more of someone else job with less and less in return all while focusing in areas of research and the arts that will not be able to support a career once and if we ever leave the university. I would very much like to find a way to focus the critical part of my animation on this fact.

There can be no criticism without a possible solution offered up in return. As I said before, the article outlines a six part plan that would completely revamp how we structure the educational system in our society. I do not want to focus on all six as that a lot of it is financial. Part two or six is where my focus lies. In this step, the author describes a complete change in the university process.

“2. Abolish permanent departments, even for undergraduate education, and create problem-focused programs. These constantly evolving programs would have sunset clauses, and every seven years each one should be evaluated and either abolished, continued or significantly changed. It is possible to imagine a broad range of topics around which such zones of inquiry could be organized: Mind, Body, Law, Information, Networks, Language, Space, Time, Media, Money, Life and Water.”

After having read this article and others like it, this idea makes a lot of sense. Why do we choose to just let it be? If the tool is obviously not working anymore, it is time to change it up. This idea of problem focused programs is a very interesting one. I feel that this style of education would open up huge possibilities for collaboration as well as prepare students to do what they want in a real world setting. Once these students graduate they will have the experience to hit the ground running, having already worked on projects that matter.

NMD204: Assignment 10

my first kinetic typography piece…

NMD204: Assignment 9

This was our first motion assignment for the class. Take one logo and turn it into another…

Release: Tools

I will be using a variety of tools through out the process of this project. In the beginning stages I will be designing the characters and scene by free hand on paper. I will then transfer into a digital media and use an array of editing and animation software to bring motion into the project. These tools include Anime Studio Pro, After Effects, Illustrator and possibly Premiere. Also, I will most likely use tools such as online animation tutorials to really add some nice effects and other aesthetics to bring the animation to a higher quality of work.

Release: Format

The format of this project will be a 2D/3D hand drawn animation. I will most likely develop the characters and scene on paper. I will storyboard the narrative then use various programs to add motion. The video will be designed to appeal to a large audience and is meant to be shared via social networking. The format is somewhat difficult to describe, so I have started posting links to animations with similar styles to what I hope to achieve. This includes duration, content, animation style, etc.

I like the characters in this animation. The simplicity of how they are drawn leaves more room for other aspects of the narrative. It seems to be a good balance between simplicity while still having enough detail to show the necessary emotions and reactions. I want to focus on the meaning and message of the video rather then getting caught up in too much details. In this sense, the characters will represent the idea of ‘everyman’.

This style of animation is somewhat like what I want in my own. I like the mix of 2D animation in a 3D space. I also think that the camera movements are nice. If I can achieve a similar look in my own style, the cinematography will definitely strengthen the message as it will draw the audience in. For example, the reason the recent ‘Kony’ video was so popular was because of its unique cinematography that captured the audiences attention from the get-go.

The video will then be posted online and promoted. The idea is to bring the video into a social network as to gain as much attention as possible. The more people who see the video the more people will start asking questions about how the power and authority is distributed amongst the college campus. In the end, we want students to understand that they can take their education into their own hands and really get the most out of their time at the university.

NMD206: Release Content

The content of this release will be a short, satirical animation on how the education system we are involved with is structured. I hope to exemplify the unfair distribution of power through a metaphorical narrative called “The College Stand”. In the short, a character will walk up to the ‘College Stand’ and will pay the fee for college. Once payed the character running the stand will give the consumer no choice and tell him “this is what you get for your money” and that is that. The unsatisfied costumer will become disgruntled as he walks away from the stand. Deciding this is not fair and unjust, the character will build his own college stand. The next cut will be a new stand with the main character running things, a line of customers around the corner and the old stand completely barren. At the end, a short message may be displayed stating facts about our education and how we have the power to structure it for ourselves.

The purpose of an animation such as this, realistically, is to simply raise the thought. I believe too many students do not question or even understand how to get the most out of their education, seeing the university and its professors in a hierarchical structure sets them up to believe they are not the ones in charge…even though they are paying for it. If this simple video can get enough people start thinking about this concept then eventually the right questions may be asked that would start the reversal of the current power structure.

NMD206: Intent 3

Running with my previous post, I want to make a satirical animation designed with the intent to be shared in social networks. The video will be used to incite conversation and controversy about a specific issue. I want to design the project around something that can be easily related as well as local and personal. In class we discussed many students unrest as to how the modern college is structured. The point was brought up that we pay all of this money to go to school. Once we get there, we are told for our money this is what we get, if we do not like it…its our problem. Many, including myself, believe this should be reversed. We should pay and say this is what we want for our money…I want to learn this! I have decided to use this issue as my foundation. I will then design a short animation to raise questions about how are education is being structured and where the power should be.

NMD206: New Project Proposal

The other day Joline dropped a bomb on our class, saying that we she was thinking about dropping the curriculum for the rest of the semester and offered us the opportunity to propose a project that we would like to work on for the last month or so of school. She told us that while we should keep in mind that it should relate to New Media, we should not let that define our ideas. I think that this is a unique opportunity that should not be wasted. However, I really want to keep my project related to New Media in some way. I have very much enjoyed my time-based classes at the university and I was thinking that I would like to do an animation of some sort. Animations can take a lot of time and work, and I do not want to undertake something to large for the time we have left, so I think the narrative should be short, but with a strong message. I really like mixing serious and or controversial issues matched with comical animation. I feel like with that sort of combination you are able to attract viewer attention while still getting your voice out there and if done in the right manner, these shorts can be come very popular and even viral- which would fit nicely with the NM many to many theory through social networking (much like the Kony video). As far as actual subject matter, I have yet to determine. I need to decide on a political or social issue that people, more specifically myself, are concerned and care about. One possible idea is that while social networking is very popular and powerful, we must not forget about the world around us and personal, face to face interactions- an animation illustrating the concern for real-world social interaction. Another idea would be an animation focused around some campus issue or event- maybe communication between majors or even the parking issue although I would hope for something slightly more important.

Anyways, the idea must be developed further obviously, but I appreciate the ability to decide for myself what is important and what I wish to work on. If class time is spent as a workshop in developing ideas and design, I believe it will afford us, the students, to truly break out our boxes and try new, exciting things that can be inspirational and informative.

NMD205 Approach: Destination Automation

For this assignment, we were supposed to make an approach at automating our own or one of our peers ‘scores’ from the pool. I chose to work on Derrick’s ‘Appicture’ daily photograph project. My goal was to use pseudo code to write a program that could automatically generate a random assignment for the daily project. My idea is to create three separate arrays that contain various parameters, such as filter, lens and subject matter. The next step would be to create a statement in which a random element from each array is called to create an assignment template that can be switched out for each random selection.

//Assignment generator for ‘Appicture’

//This program generates assignment content. It describes the assignment in relation to three perameters with random values, it is up to the user to find lens, filter and subject matter to carry out assignment.

//Create arrays for all three perameters in assignment generator.

Lens= [telefoto, wideAngle, fishEye, macro];

//as many lenses as desired…

Filter= [sepia, blacknWhite, vibrant, stencil, burntPaper, hopenChange];

//as many filters as desired, all arrays can be updated and added to.

Subject= [family, friends, fun, emotion, entertainment, food, sports, architecture, socialEvent, weather, automotive, work]

//this array should be updated frequently to ensure user interest and activity.

//Get random values from each array.

Lens.random;

Filter.random;

Subject.random;

NMD206: Class Work 3/15

Speaking of Deep Play and what it takes to be a man in today’s society we were discussing instances in which a person has been broken. In movies and in TV there are many examples as well as in real-life unfortunately. I brought up the example of a new television series called “Homeland” in which a POW returns from captivity after 8 years of no contact. While there are underlying twist and drama to the show, it is forced to recognize the exact moment when the man was pushed over the edge and completely broken. The main character is made to kill his fellow friend and POW as the captors film and taunt.

Edge of Art: Chapter 2 Response

Chapter 2 has definitely been the most relate able chapter thus far in the course for me. I cannot say that I am the most avid gamer, but I do have some experience and could connect with much of what was said. The first prompt asks us to consider the level of violence that comes with most games these days. An easy example of violent games is ‘GTA’. The game is based on the fact that you are put into this populated environment and left to your own devices to make moral or immoral decisions. I think that this attraction to violence carries the same undertones that an attraction to speed or danger has. Many people would like to try things or fantasize about doing things that they could not or would not do in real-life. Having said this, I think that the reason that these games are so commonly intertwined with violence and danger is because these games afford us the opportunity to experience these emotions and actions without the serious repercussions and consequences that would normally follow.

The second prompt questions the idea of arrest in games. I take its meaning as a separation of the user and the game, forcing the user to question choices and weigh decisions. For example, games with real-time developing plot lines that change and grow as the user plays and decides which  choice to make and an attempt at a desired goal. This can be anything between challenging the idea of taking one path or the other or choosing to kill a character or choosing to help him or her. In some games you even earn points as to being a good guy or bad guy based against the decisions the user chooses to make. This requires the user to make some decisions that rest on some very basic moral or emotional levels.

The third prompt questions what happens when games break through the digital world into the real world. I think that this can go either way, good or bad. Much like problems with children practicing wrestling moves and getting hurt or killed in their own living rooms, games can inspire unsafe events. In the same respects, it could inspire one to try something new or different because it allowed the user to ‘test the water’ by experiencing something through games without the fear of consequence or failure. People are always going to make good and bad decisions and I believe that we cannot limit or creativity to the fear of what decisions they may inspire. The best we can do is caution and warn against making poor choices and promote the idea that these games are the window for which we can experience and emulate behavior we should not engage in the real world.

The fourth prompt questions gender roles within the gaming community. I think that this ties into a lot of what we have been discussing. These games offer an opportunity to experience something that we may not be able to try in any other setting. Many violent games are geared towards the male population while there are games for raising families and making food that are more commonly geared towards the female demographic. There are also examples that twist these gender roles. For example, Tomb Raider is a very popular game. The game offers violence, danger, adventure and puzzle solving. While this sounds like a game geared towards a male demo., the user’s character is a female. The question here is whether or not it matters that a guy picks up the sticks to play as a woman. Do they enjoy the fact? Do they even notice it? Does it ‘erk’ them or deter them from playing the game?

“In its raw form, gender can be arresting, as the hit counts of porn sites readily attest. In the context of gaming, however, gender more often serves as a character embellishment meant to drive rather than halt the story. Yet without moments of arrest, games that invoke or rely on gender as a plot device usually fail to transcend stereotypical roles for male or female characters.”(Edge of Art, 81) – As this reads, ‘an embellishment meant to drive…’ comes to meaning as I have been trying to describe. This idea that elements such as female characters are meant to drive the game rather then halt play. Again, just offering a unique opportunity that leaves the user to his or her own choice as a worth while experience or rather the opposite.

The final prompt asks about how the US Military uses gaming as a recruitment device in today’s society. This to me seems to be a slippery slope. On the one hand, games have been developed so far and have become so realistic that they can and maybe should be used to train soldiers on how to operate in war-time situations. On the other hand, many kids play these games for all the reasons discussed above and do not fully understand a true life level of violence and danger. It seems almost not fair to tempt young people with all the excitement and ‘cool effects’ that come with the game. It seems slightly misrepresented.

Approach: Can You Hang?

To follow up on my previous intent, I want design an interactive video program in which the user an manipulate pre-shot footage of a climber on a climbing wall. The idea is that you would designate a section of the wall as your “frame” with a reasonable amount of holds. You would have to then do the math and figure out each possible move within the designated route or path.

Once you had filmed each possible combination of moves, you would then cut the footage up into each individual move. The next part complicates things. In order for this project to work, I would have to design a computer program that would implement hidden buttons behind the footage representing each hold on the wall for the user to choose from. The program would have to recognize the click in relation to the footage required to represent that desired move.

This could be a useful interactive installation because, depending on the user, it could educate someone on the best way to accomplish a route, inspire someone to design a new route or simply button-clicking entertainment for someone stumbling around on a computer somewhere.

Approach: Movie Scene Redub

I based my approach from Anna Werner’s original intent of re-dubbing old films with new jargon and present day sayings. This approach will focus on one movie specifically as well as one specific aspect of the dialogue with in a certain scene. Anna’s idea spurred a memory of mine from when I was much younger. One of my favorite things to do was watch movies with my dad. The only problem was his taste in movies; needless to say I saw a few before I probably should have…(Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist, Terminator, the list goes on…)

Anyways, one time in particular, we were watching ‘True Romance’ starring Christian Slater and Christopher Walken. There was one scene in which there was a large amount of violence and good bit of unsavory language used. This also happened to be the scene to which my mother walked into. Long story short, she lost her temper something fierce.

This memory brought forth the idea to re-dub the scene that got my dad into so much trouble back in the day. I want to remove all the curse words from the ‘Drexl Scene’ in True Romance and replace them with a comedic variable that best suits the given sentence. I think this would be interesting to see how it changes the mood of the scene as well as to see whether or not the scene can be carried out with any sort of new direction. There is no real political or moral motivation behind this project, simply a tribute to a man trying to show his son some fine cinema and the prices he paid for it. Below is the entire scene that will be manipulated.

Intent: Sidewalks Get Their Say Too

Going off of the discussions held in class (NMD206), this project could encompass many of the issues raised. We want to find out what students want or are missing in our majors as well as the university as a whole. One way of communicating this in a strong manner would be the use of sidewalk chalk. People walk the campus sidewalk everyday, almost without a choice…this would afford us the opportunity to be right in the communities face. Anybody on campus would be forced to acknowledge or at least notice the messages we would be trying to portray. We would use a mixture of cornstarch, food coloring and water as our medium as to not upset the school too much as well as a green means of execution. I would want to make large stencils of either graphic text or some sort of communicative image that could demonstrate the point issued.

Intent: Can You Hang?

I enjoy rock climbing very much. I climb about five or six days a week so I would consider it to be a large part of who I am…or at least something that helps define me. For an autobotographical art piece in which I would film myself climbing to a set parameter of holds on a rock wall. I would then have an interactive video program in which a user could hover the mouse over the hold that they would have me go to. Having filmed a move to each individual hold we would be able to write code to show the correlating move.

Intent: Visual Memory Reflection

Having been inspired by the ‘wear-cam’ from class I came up with an interesting idea for a new sort of autobiography. The idea is that someone would wear a much more practical recording device,(video or still). The user would go about their regular days, then later would have the option to edit out irrelevant information and situations to bring forward any meaning full or important events from the day, week, month ect. Once the ‘memories’ were edited the user could then add in a reflective segment for anything that warrants a reflection. In this way we would be bringing an autobiography onto many platforms, allowing people to gain a through-the-eyes-of perspective as well as the ability to then understand how the user was feeling, or what was going through their mind during the edited memory stream. A user could choose to keep up with this for as long as he or she cared to do so and would make a very interesting video-journal series.

Reading Responses: Week 5

Cyborg Manifesto:

Having read the ‘Cyborg Manifesto’, I cannot say I walked away with much. If anything, I left the page feeling more confused then enlightened. The words seemed very preachy and much of it was frilly to the point of losing my attention. I kept having to return to previous paragraphs and try to piece together what the author’s point actually was. By the end of the text I really did not have a concrete idea as to what the author was arguing. Also, I kept losing the connection between feminism and the cyborg theme. I do not doubt the author knew what they were talking about to some extent, but in my personal opinion, when someone rants right off the bat, it can be hard to gain support or even interest.

Reading Responses Week Two

Edge of Art: Hacktivist Art:

One thing that I found to be interesting was at the very beginning of the chapter. The author was describing the difference between an ordinary hacker (if there is such a thing) and a ‘hacktivist’. From what I understand, a hacker is one who probes and obtains information over the internet. This is usually done just to see if you can, more sport than anything else…like a puzzle or a hunt. The hacking becomes hacktivism when there is purpose behind the work. Hacktivist are those who want to make change or boost awareness. Although it is not of a digital format, this reminded me of graffiti and one artist in particular. Banksy is one of the world’s most famous graffiti artists. Much of his work is of a political or social theme and almost always a criticism. His art resonates globally because of its subject matter and the messages he is trying to convey. While being popular and controversial, it is always illegal, which I find to be an interesting comparison to the digital medium. I think that this is very similar to what hacktivists are trying to accomplish when they intrude networks or pull stunt of some nature.

Theater of the Oppressed:

I have to be brutally honest on this post. I really did not understand much of what was said in the text. I could not really figure out what the author was trying to explain and how it related to New Media. It was interesting in the beginning when the author spoke about the man who ran for political office as an act of theater, then was elected. I also somewhat understood the different degrees of theater there were. I have never been to a theater where people interact with the actors in what the author calls spectating. Like I said though, I was having a very hard time following its connection to New Media.

Reading Responses Week One

Pariser:

Something that stuck with me while reading Pariser’s article was the idea that we must take action for ourselves. I think that it is true that a lot of people will tend to take the easy road and rely on others to make the world a better place for them. It is easy to get too comfortable with elected officials in offices making all of these decisions for us, but the truth is that we need to be involved or it will never be right. I have a good deal of respect for the girl who was killed keeping tallies in Bagdad.  She took it upon herself to try and correct the wrongs she was seeing in society. At the end of the day, we need to lead by example and if we don’t like something about the community we live in, then it is our responsibility to do something about it.

Crosbie:

In Crosbie’s text, something that I found interesting was when he is explaining the idea of a New Medium and what made it possible. “In other words, the New Medium has the advantages of both the interpersonal and mass media, but without their complementary disadvantages.” I had never really thought of technology in those specific terms until it was spelled out for me. I think that it is a very simple but accurate statement. As young people soon to be entering some sort of career or industry, we should take care in remembering this idea of “uniquely individualized information” being sent and viewed by a “potentially infinite number of people.”

Gelder:

I have not paid much attention to the Occupy movement. Since we have been discussing it in detail in class I have finally started to form my own opinion on the matter. And my opinion is this: I am sorta on the fence. I think that it is definitely hard to take a group seriously when they cannot even tell you what they want. In today’s world its common that you should either have the answers or at least act like you do. On the other hand, I can see that idea of point out that things are not how they should be, even if we don’t know what to do to fix them. I think that in the end it will be a positive thing for our country.
