Approach: Can You Hang?

To follow up on my previous intent, I want design an interactive video program in which the user an manipulate pre-shot footage of a climber on a climbing wall. The idea is that you would designate a section of the wall as your “frame” with a reasonable amount of holds. You would have to then do the math and figure out each possible move within the designated route or path.

Once you had filmed each possible combination of moves, you would then cut the footage up into each individual move. The next part complicates things. In order for this project to work, I would have to design a computer program that would implement hidden buttons behind the footage representing each hold on the wall for the user to choose from. The program would have to recognize the click in relation to the footage required to represent that desired move.

This could be a useful interactive installation because, depending on the user, it could educate someone on the best way to accomplish a route, inspire someone to design a new route or simply button-clicking entertainment for someone stumbling around on a computer somewhere.

Approach: Movie Scene Redub

I based my approach from Anna Werner’s original intent of re-dubbing old films with new jargon and present day sayings. This approach will focus on one movie specifically as well as one specific aspect of the dialogue with in a certain scene. Anna’s idea spurred a memory of mine from when I was much younger. One of my favorite things to do was watch movies with my dad. The only problem was his taste in movies; needless to say I saw a few before I probably should have…(Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist, Terminator, the list goes on…)

Anyways, one time in particular, we were watching ‘True Romance’ starring Christian Slater and Christopher Walken. There was one scene in which there was a large amount of violence and good bit of unsavory language used. This also happened to be the scene to which my mother walked into. Long story short, she lost her temper something fierce.

This memory brought forth the idea to re-dub the scene that got my dad into so much trouble back in the day. I want to remove all the curse words from the ‘Drexl Scene’ in True Romance and replace them with a comedic variable that best suits the given sentence. I think this would be interesting to see how it changes the mood of the scene as well as to see whether or not the scene can be carried out with any sort of new direction. There is no real political or moral motivation behind this project, simply a tribute to a man trying to show his son some fine cinema and the prices he paid for it. Below is the entire scene that will be manipulated.

Intent: Sidewalks Get Their Say Too

Going off of the discussions held in class (NMD206), this project could encompass many of the issues raised. We want to find out what students want or are missing in our majors as well as the university as a whole. One way of communicating this in a strong manner would be the use of sidewalk chalk. People walk the campus sidewalk everyday, almost without a choice…this would afford us the opportunity to be right in the communities face. Anybody on campus would be forced to acknowledge or at least notice the messages we would be trying to portray. We would use a mixture of cornstarch, food coloring and water as our medium as to not upset the school too much as well as a green means of execution. I would want to make large stencils of either graphic text or some sort of communicative image that could demonstrate the point issued.

Intent: Can You Hang?

I enjoy rock climbing very much. I climb about five or six days a week so I would consider it to be a large part of who I am…or at least something that helps define me. For an autobotographical art piece in which I would film myself climbing to a set parameter of holds on a rock wall. I would then have an interactive video program in which a user could hover the mouse over the hold that they would have me go to. Having filmed a move to each individual hold we would be able to write code to show the correlating move.

Intent: Visual Memory Reflection

Having been inspired by the ‘wear-cam’ from class I came up with an interesting idea for a new sort of autobiography. The idea is that someone would wear a much more practical recording device,(video or still). The user would go about their regular days, then later would have the option to edit out irrelevant information and situations to bring forward any meaning full or important events from the day, week, month ect. Once the ‘memories’ were edited the user could then add in a reflective segment for anything that warrants a reflection. In this way we would be bringing an autobiography onto many platforms, allowing people to gain a through-the-eyes-of perspective as well as the ability to then understand how the user was feeling, or what was going through their mind during the edited memory stream. A user could choose to keep up with this for as long as he or she cared to do so and would make a very interesting video-journal series.

Reading Responses: Week 5

Cyborg Manifesto:

Having read the ‘Cyborg Manifesto’, I cannot say I walked away with much. If anything, I left the page feeling more confused then enlightened. The words seemed very preachy and much of it was frilly to the point of losing my attention. I kept having to return to previous paragraphs and try to piece together what the author’s point actually was. By the end of the text I really did not have a concrete idea as to what the author was arguing. Also, I kept losing the connection between feminism and the cyborg theme. I do not doubt the author knew what they were talking about to some extent, but in my personal opinion, when someone rants right off the bat, it can be hard to gain support or even interest.

Reading Responses Week Two

Edge of Art: Hacktivist Art:

One thing that I found to be interesting was at the very beginning of the chapter. The author was describing the difference between an ordinary hacker (if there is such a thing) and a ‘hacktivist’. From what I understand, a hacker is one who probes and obtains information over the internet. This is usually done just to see if you can, more sport than anything else…like a puzzle or a hunt. The hacking becomes hacktivism when there is purpose behind the work. Hacktivist are those who want to make change or boost awareness. Although it is not of a digital format, this reminded me of graffiti and one artist in particular. Banksy is one of the world’s most famous graffiti artists. Much of his work is of a political or social theme and almost always a criticism. His art resonates globally because of its subject matter and the messages he is trying to convey. While being popular and controversial, it is always illegal, which I find to be an interesting comparison to the digital medium. I think that this is very similar to what hacktivists are trying to accomplish when they intrude networks or pull stunt of some nature.

Theater of the Oppressed:

I have to be brutally honest on this post. I really did not understand much of what was said in the text. I could not really figure out what the author was trying to explain and how it related to New Media. It was interesting in the beginning when the author spoke about the man who ran for political office as an act of theater, then was elected. I also somewhat understood the different degrees of theater there were. I have never been to a theater where people interact with the actors in what the author calls spectating. Like I said though, I was having a very hard time following its connection to New Media.

Reading Responses Week One

Pariser:

Something that stuck with me while reading Pariser’s article was the idea that we must take action for ourselves. I think that it is true that a lot of people will tend to take the easy road and rely on others to make the world a better place for them. It is easy to get too comfortable with elected officials in offices making all of these decisions for us, but the truth is that we need to be involved or it will never be right. I have a good deal of respect for the girl who was killed keeping tallies in Bagdad.  She took it upon herself to try and correct the wrongs she was seeing in society. At the end of the day, we need to lead by example and if we don’t like something about the community we live in, then it is our responsibility to do something about it.

Crosbie:

In Crosbie’s text, something that I found interesting was when he is explaining the idea of a New Medium and what made it possible. “In other words, the New Medium has the advantages of both the interpersonal and mass media, but without their complementary disadvantages.” I had never really thought of technology in those specific terms until it was spelled out for me. I think that it is a very simple but accurate statement. As young people soon to be entering some sort of career or industry, we should take care in remembering this idea of “uniquely individualized information” being sent and viewed by a “potentially infinite number of people.”

Gelder:

I have not paid much attention to the Occupy movement. Since we have been discussing it in detail in class I have finally started to form my own opinion on the matter. And my opinion is this: I am sorta on the fence. I think that it is definitely hard to take a group seriously when they cannot even tell you what they want. In today’s world its common that you should either have the answers or at least act like you do. On the other hand, I can see that idea of point out that things are not how they should be, even if we don’t know what to do to fix them. I think that in the end it will be a positive thing for our country.
